Enjoy While You Can

Recently I had the opportunity to visit a few elderly people – they were all facing some major health issues. I knew them when they were younger, filled with vigor and vitality. Now they lie quietly, slowly diminishing. One thing I noted that they all had in common was their lack of appetite. Maybe it was the diet they were subjected to – not sure. They would taste a little and put away the rest. No desire to eat.

Having an appetite is a blessing. If there’s food on your table, you are blessed immensely. Your little garden or your expansive farm is a blessing. If your taste buds still function, embrace this as a blessing. Many can’t eat, others don’t want to eat, some suffer from eating disorders, others have an unhealthy relationship with food and sadly many are dealing with food insecurity.

I have some foodies in my contact groups who often post their meals to stimulate chat. Here are some of my favorites, largely from my island nation:

Ackee and saltfish with yam, banana and dumplings
Banana and callaloo
Breadfruit and ackee
Dominican fried rice and avocado
Coconut Jelly
Festival with curry goat and some veggies
Fish – Ready to be steamed
Venezuelan Hallacas
Mangoes
Pan de Jamon
Favorite seasonings
Steamed Fish

As you sit to eat today, lift a voice of thanksgiving that you are amongst those who have been blessed with an appetite. Your table and your ‘bread baskets’ are not empty. You have a desire to eat and you can afford food to eat. We are numbered among those who have something to eat today and can do so with joy. As we do, lets not forget to pass the blessing on to someone who may be experiencing food crisis today.

And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land He has given you.’ Deuteronomy 8:10

  1. I’ve never thanked God for the blessing of appetite! Usually we wish we had less so we’d be less tempted to eat too much! But you’ve reminded me of what it’s like to have a cold and not able to taste anything, or when nothing tastes good. You’re right, of course–an appetite and the pleasure of an abundance of flavors (like the wonderful dishes in the pics you shared with us today!), are delightful blessings we should be grateful for.

  2. Absolute Yum – mouth watering pictures. A home cooked meal is such a beautiful blessing. Many thanks to be able pause here and think about how truely blessed I have been. Enjoy and appreciate all that you can. ❤️
