The Road Ahead

Destination addiction is a chronic condition that plagues a lot of us. Truthfully I’ve had to fight the urge to be obsessed with ‘ that someday’ when I’ll be happy or fulfilled. When I turn 18, get married, graduate college, get my dream job, have a baby, purchase my dream house, retire, or lose that extra 20 lbs. The list goes on, maybe you can add yours. I think it is natural to hope for a better day – seek change, level up and improve our current situation. There’s nothing wrong with that. However, we run the risk of missing out on the simple pleasures of the now if we are always asking, ‘are we there yet?’ Quite often, we miss the lessons to be learned on the journey – we miss the reason for the perceived delay. We never grow to grasp the concept of timing if become off balance and preoccupied with the ‘destination’. The longer I live the more I grow to appreciate these truths: (I) There’s a time for everything. (II) What I’m believing for, hoping for will show up when I’m ready for it. (III) Sometimes God says no. Both His no and His yes are from the same place – a place of love.

A few years ago, I was believing God for something to change. I calculated the time line and it probably wouldn’t change for 6-8 months. Frustration seeped through my soul. One day as I quieted the noise and turmoil in my spirit, I heard a simple question [ paraphrased] – ” Do you plan to forgo your happiness for 8 months?” A shift was made in my spirit that day. I chose to enjoy the journey. Nothing changed, but I did! I took back those 240 days I would have missed living frustrated and disgruntled.

Whatever lies ahead for this coming year, let’s choose to enjoy the ride. As a cautionary note: Take the right people with you. Remember not everyone who came with you can go with you. That’s a whole different topic for another day! For now, go with God! There’s no promise the journey will be easy, but He does promise to be there. Don’t miss the moments to acknowledge Him. You’ll be surprised how He shows up at times!

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

Matthew 6:34 [MSG]
