Not too Old for This

The current narrative is that we almost never make new friends after forty. Well I’ve never been one to pattern my life after current trends. I believe people come into our lives at different seasons for different reasons and I embrace them all. I don’t plan on missing the moments. If the last few years have taught us anything, it is to treasure the people who God allows across our path. The moments go by so fast. While we use wisdom, we take a chance, open our hearts and allow others in.

This is my new gal pal Sincerely Jan and we are both over 50. We met right here on WP- My online hook up! A few days ago we connected in NYC to seek out some of the city’s hidden gems. Can you imagine the look of disbelief on the face of my millennial son when I first told him I was going out with my new found friend? He shouted, “What!!!” He thought I was crazy. Echoing everything I used to tell him in his more risk-taking years. He should have met me as a teenager. I’ve so mellowed out. My response, ” Boy – go sit!” When did we become so afraid of trusting our hearts and that God-given instinct of ours? In this crazy world so drenched with fear and cynicism, there’s still a place for kindred spirits to join.

We don’t live in the same city but I think it’s safe to say we’ll still be connecting when : ‘…[we]become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; [when our] hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom…( Ecclesiastes 12: 5a). God still connects heart and lives after 50. We are not too old to make room in our hearts for another traveler here on this wonderful piece of the rock. Take a chance – you’re not too old for that!
