That War

Today we are reminded that freedom ‘to be and do’ is something we thirst for as humans. I can’t even begin to imagine what it feels like to be a ‘caged bird’. I’d like to believe that freedom is also important to God. The prison of hate, addiction, bitterness, unforgiveness, narcissism, fear, and uncontrolled anger gives us a glimpse into some of what have kept us captive through out the ages. God in His love knew we’d need a way out. His way is perfect but it is not always the popular way. I’ve lived past half a century and have longed figured out that His version of freedom and mine are at times in conflict. What He asks of us is very often uncomfortable. What I want usually resembles comfort. Today I pray that as I grow in faith, I’d truly come to understand ‘freedom’ from God’s vantage point.

Free to be me
A cry we often utter
Still I struggle with
This me
Splinter pieces
Sharp edges
Toxic thoughts
That war rages on

Fighting to be
At peace with this me
Searching for the balm
To heal the frayed edges
Invited in Your presence
To see freedom Your way
We still war
We want freedom our way

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” [John 8:32]
