A little more 💤

Daily writing prompt
What’s one small improvement you can make in your life?
‘Rest, restore, rejuvenate’

That’s a no-brainer for me – go to bed earlier. One small improvement – a lifetime of benefits. I know I am sleep deprived. A pal of mine, who never seems to sleep, commented that he’ll sleep when he’s dead. I want to enjoy sleep now, while I’m alive. It may not make me live longer, but it sure improves our quality of life. Research shows that an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders. In addition, approximately 35% of US adults sleep less than seven hours daily.

Common sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Though I have no problem sleeping – I seem to have a problem getting into bed. I often question my nocturnal activities. Why is it that I feel the need to clean, try to find something in my closet, do computer work and the list goes on? Why do I fight something that’s so beneficial to my overall well-being? Sleep can play a crucial role in weight control, emotional wellbeing, blood pressure, memory functions, stress reduction and improved mood. In general, sleep affects our mental and physical performance.

Proverbs 4:16 (AMP) states , ‘For the wicked cannot sleep unless they do evil; and they are deprived of sleep unless they make someone stumble and fall.’ Far be it from me to claim perfection, but I certainly try to deal with my heart issues before I go to sleep. I find that a sincere heart to heart with God settles some of the peace stealers that keep many of us awake. Fear, anger, unforgiveness, worry, envy ,jealousy and bitterness are some of the culprits that can steal our sleep. Of course illnesses, medications, even aging is said to impact our ability to sleep well. We were made to sleep at certain times. If it evades us, we should examine the root cause.

As for me – I’ll give it another go tonight! I’ll try to roll into bed by 10:30 p.m. May God help me! This has been my hashtag life goal for a minute. I have failed terribly so far. Maybe tonight will be the night…fingers cross.
