Daily Writing Prompt: Describe one simple thing you do that brings joy to your life.

If I can help somebody, as I travel along
If I can help somebody, with a word or song
If I can help somebody, from doing wrong
No, my living shall not be in vain

Those words of that popular song by Mahalia Jackson captures the essence of what brings most joy to my life. Maybe that’s why teaching might be my last dance. I get to do this everyday. Helping someone until they are strong enough to walk again, until they gain their wings to fly on their own. Sometimes just being there to listen is all a person may need to unload the burdens that overwhelm. One simple suggestion can open a world of possibilities when hopelessness pervades a person’s space. The mind can be so clouded with indecision when we sense we are doing it alone – a timely word of wisdom often brings the clarity needed. In a world where it is becoming common ‘to do bad all by myself’, I find that people still need a helping hand. It doesn’t take much to look outwards for a minute- ‘reach out and touch somebody’s hand’. It’s amazing how we can change their world and ours.

You smile- I smile
The burdens roll away
The wounds begin to heal
Once broken
Now on the mend
A bent back
Now raised
Stronger than before
You laugh – I laugh
Your joy – my joy
