Late Night Musings

‘Middle School ’90s’

My late night reflection:

So many of our children are in therapy here in 2025. Why? Where is the simplicity that comes with being a child. I pray our children today learn the simple joys of living. Not just craving for the more and more that never satisfies. I often wonder if us overachievers Gen Xers and millennials have pushed our children to succeed for the wrong reasons. I recently heard the comment that quite often parents drive their children to succeed to deal with their own insecurities. Sadly many of us live vicariously through children who are carrying burdens they shouldn’t have to bear. Let’s free our children to be children.

This was the last set of middle schoolers that I taught somewhere back in the ’90s. There were no cell phones or devices to captivate their hearts and minds. They, however, had their own vices too. Such is the nature of fallen man. That being said, I do remember how different they were. They ran in the rain, played their own organized sports before and after school. They wrote letters and notes, dropped by each others homes without calling, ate ice-cream while walking home and shared everything they ate. They laughed loudly and love field trips. They hugged and held hands. They actually enjoyed the playgrounds and parks and knew how to enjoy the beauty of outdoors. They even went to the library to read. And enjoyed it! Times were surely simpler.

Let’s model enjoying life for children. While we are occupied with paying the bills and adulting, time is slowly slipping away. May we leave them with a legacy of living life out loud as we create memories that will stay with them for a lifetime. The moments that will cause them to laugh especially when they encounter their own difficult seasons. Those simpler times when it didn’t cost that much to laugh. The days of live , laugh and love!
