Where I Belong

Daily writing prompt
Tell us about a time when you felt out of place.

Ever felt out of place? Too many times to mention. I am female. I am an immigrant. I don’t cuss, smoke nor drink hard liquor. I don’t tolerate the complaining spirit well. I prefer calm to chaos and unwanted noise. Loudness, vulgarity, and abrasiveness tend to make me shrink back. In my world the glass is more often half full rather than half empty. Lies and hypocrisy wear me out quickly. I don’t always belong.

Sometime I don’t want to try new things, I am comfortable in my discomfort. There are times I should be running and I find myself walking. Asleep when I should be awake – awake when I should be asleep. It takes me a minute sometimes to figure out I’m a square trying to fit in a round hole. There I find myself out of place. Strangely even in the midst of such quandary, I find that safe place on the inside. That place where I remain untouched.

So yes, in a world of imperfect people like myself – there will be numerous times when I feel out of place. The beautiful thing is I get to be at home with me. Home is where I always fit. Where I remind myself who I am and Whose I am. Where I belong.

….so oddly out of place and yet so perfectly at home.” ( Charles Dickenson)

  1. There’s an old gospel song that begins, “This world is not my home; I’m justa passin’ through.” There ARE times when Jesus-followers feel out of place, because we don’t really belong here. But when our triune God establishes the new heaven and the new earth, and we’re seated at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, that’s when we’ll feel complete and eternal belonging!

  2. This really resonates with me. It’s so important to find that inner peace and sense of belonging within yourself. Funnily enough, I’ve been feeling a bit “out of place” in my own house lately with so much clutter. Renting a dumpster to clear it all out has been my way of getting back to that “perfectly at home” feeling. Great post

    1. I hear you. It’s actually a good thing that we get to experience these moments. Only then can we take steps to recalibrate. I pray your ‘dumpster moment’ will lead you to times of calm and a good deep exhale!😊
