This Thanksgiving I had breakfast with my neighbors – fifty plus years of marriage, proven ministry, children and numerous grandchildren. We had delicious escovitch fish [with cassava bammy]- a Jamaican staple. While we dined and chatted – I soaked in wisdom. Listening attentively, my heart grabbed a hold of something I have experienced but never processed deeply. Being led by God. Not hearing an audible voice – just being led.
Being led requires childlike, even bold faith. It calls for flexibility and a willingness to ‘follow the cloud by day or fire by night’. You don’t always hear a ‘voice’. Actually you don’t know much – you might just be flowing along with an agenda you think you orchestrated. The pieces fit together, not because you planned it – you were just a game piece on this elaborate board. God is the master player.
As I listened, I reflected on how much of the major events in my life involved the hand of God. Schools, colleges, career, places I’ve resided and jobs I’ve had. People who’ve stayed, those who’ve left. I’ve never had to pursued a friendship or a relationship- those that mattered and stood the test of time were all choreographed by the finger of God. Impossible doors and unmerited favors – all God. I’m not one that knows much about anything – I just move as the fire gets lit in my soul. As I’m led. My prayer is not just to grow with God, but to always ‘go with God’ as He leads.
βTeach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!β – Psalm 143:10 ESV
