I Would, If I Could

Daily writing prompt
What’s the biggest risk you’d like to take — but haven’t been able to?

Yesterday I had a conversation with a friend about affairs of the heart among other things. She’s been married twice. I have never been. While sharing, I commented on the fact that I’ve had many potential loves who’ve walked in and out of the doors of my life. BUT honestly- I can’t say there’s one ‘that got away’. No regrets that I didn’t or couldn’t. I’ve just not met the one that I wanted to do life with…the one I can’t live without. The one I’d give my heart to unreservedly. The one I’d risk being bare and naked with. The one who loves the perfectly imperfect me. Call me a dreamer, unrealistic or a hopeless romantic. My lens are not blurred or hazy. I’ve seen love like that.

Whether it’s the knowing from the first touch or the growing to know – there’s a love that’s worth the risk. The one that soothes like a balm when the heart get’s wounded. The one that stays with you when all else leaves – let’s you know you’re wanted. The love that sits with you in the pain – helps you see where and when you are bleeding. The knowing that we are going to climb some mountains together and traverse some valleys; in the process we might get bitten, or scratched. We may fall down but we’re going help each other up. I’d like to take that risk with that kind of love. I refuse to buy into the toxic narrative that the enemy of my soul is playing in the ears of many today. There’s love that; yes, there is.

So why haven’t I been able to take that risk? I haven’t encountered the one that’s worth the jump or maybe it’s not uncovered or revealed yet. Either way, I’ll watched you from a distance. You who have risked it and have found that it was worth all. You’ve collected the dividends and would gamble on it all over again if you had to. I know you’d tell me it was worth it all.

You’re worth it all
The thrills and the spills
Aches and pains
Worth traversing the unknown
While discovering the beauty there is

I’ll risk the monotony
Of seen your face for a lifetime
Anticipating your every move
Smiling at the familiar
While creating lasting memories

I’ll risk the uncertainties
This most unlikely ‘us’
The one no one had imagined
One yet separate
Broken and beautiful

Together we beat in synchrony
We breathe it in
We take the tumble – together
We rise – together
Destined – I’d risk it to find ‘us’

  1. I hear you lady. Remember though you have to first take the risk so you can find out if they are all those things you mentioned. Rarely are they that way from the start, but time shared together eventually gets you there 🙂❤️.
