Feelings – Nothing More

For a few months I’ve not been writing as often as I used to. A number of events or situations may have contributed to this trench I find myself in. If I’m to be honest however, I can easily attribute it to one major thing – feelings. Yesterday I ignored those pesky ‘enemies of creativity’ and opened my laptop. I usually write when something speaks to me in a special way. I didn’t ‘feel’ like writing, I just decided to write. The moment I let my heart do the speaking, I wrote a post effortlessly. My feelings have been my enemy for months and I have listened to them telling me lies for a little too long.

I wonder how many times you and I have allowed our feelings to dictate our reality. How often have I allowed those unnamed emotions to drive me to a place of apathy or even despondency? Countless times I have hopelessly given permission to these senseless notions to browbeat me into unproductivity. I don’t do because I don’t feel like. I’ve come to realize that they are just feelings – nothing more. They don’t get to set the tone for my day or tyrannize me from moment to moment. I’ve made a decision to defy the unhealthy ones at all odds, so I don’t miss the moments anymore.

Today I rise up and give space to the gifts and talents I’ve been blessed with. No longer will allow them to lay dormant while my loud barren feelings blabber in my ears. Feelings are part of the human experience but they can be deceptive. Never allow them to speak louder than God’s truth. Scriptures remind us that the human heart by nature is ‘deceitful’ (Jeremiah 17:9). Science tells us that the brain first ‘processes and generate feelings’. They also believe that the heart plays a significant role in determining how the brain responds to emotion. Check your heart frequently. Avoid harboring those incomplete truths and complete lies that influence our feelings. Join me on this journey as we turn the volume down on voices that stifle, cripple and lead us into barrenness. Often times it’s nothing more than feelings – rise above them and live!

  1. Good for you, my friend! I find it’s difficult to manage emotional state when we’ve never been shown that. Speaking only for myself. I don’t think past generations have given the tools to do that. Learning to do it, is a blessing.

    1. I think God helps us in our insufficiencies by gently prompting us, walking us to wholeness piece by piece. Sometimes He removes the scale from our eyes, so we see what was ‘ hidden’ because of our imperfections. The latter was my story with ‘my feelings’. One may call it divine revelation. I often ask Him to show me how to walk out what He expects of me because most times I don’t know how to. It takes time but He’s faithful.💕
