I consider myself to be really blessed to find some sense of purpose in my career. From time to time, there is a challenge that opens my heart and mind – an opportunity for growth in grace. One day a student walked into my class and told me he is supposed to be with me at that time. I’d never seen him before nor heard his name. He informed he had switched his schedule recently. It seems the school office hadn’t done the work on the back end yet to complete the change. I asked if he was absent for any period of time –he said he was, for a few days. He then proceeded to tell me he was out because he was ‘ Baker Acted’. Those of us who are teachers know how that phrase stirs something in you. You begin to pay careful attention.
You may have never heard the term before. Being ‘Baker Acted’ basically means that a person has shown some extreme behavior that suggests a mental illness, and ‘without care or treatment, may result in harm to themselves or to others.‘ They can be detained for mental health evaluation and treatment if needed. If they are not deemed to be harmful, they will be released from confinement. Most people do not volunteer this information, so I was a bit taken aback when the student revealed this. I teach mostly adults and a few teens. Like all of us, they come with colorful stories.
When people open their world to us it presents the opportunity to run to them or away from them. Doors are open to impact a life for good or fear the challenges that might arise from going all in. I’ve come to see challenges as opportunities turned inside out. Rather than ‘why me’, it might help to change our perspective – why not me. These are defining moments in life that can propel us forward in unimaginable ways. We dare to move forward trusting that we are fully equipped and graced for this new thing. There is purpose in this, and I am chosen for this task.

So, why not me? Why not you? Almost always, a better you — a better me awaits. Take a chance today — welcome that new challenge! Be honored that God saw it fit to entrust you with this new assignment. A life might be waiting for you –someone who needs your wisdom, experience, and kindness. Maybe we can shine some light and bring hope where hope is now lost.
***Thanks for reading – You might just be the person for the job!
Yes! Sometimes I worry whether I’m up to certain tasks. This is how I try to reframe my thinking. Instead of why me or I’m not good enough, ask myself why not me and trust in God!🙏🏼 He always shows me how to handle the situation in His time. Thanks for sharing this, it’s a great reminder.☺️

Yes, my sister!! My favorite scriptures “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
