What makes a teacher great?

As a teenager leaving high school, I was blank. I had no idea what I wanted to do. My pastor suggested that I tried teaching. That was never on my vision board and I thought it funny. I then reasoned with myself; I had nothing to lose by giving it a shot. I would leave college as a 20 year-old, so I could always change careers if that didn’t work out. Best decision ever! I was made for this. Teaching to me is like breathing–natural. So, today I am blessed to be paid to do what I was made to do. Those students above are grown adults now –they were my trial bunch. Thankfully they were so amazing –I remained an educator to this day.

So what makes a teacher great? From the heart of my students:

She sees me–she hears me. She listens. When I can’t see the great in me she sees it. It’s always more than ABCs and 123s, I’m being prepared for life. To occupy my space here. I am allowed to share my heart–I feel safe with her. I am challenged to face my fears and my limitations. Her passion ignites a flame in my heart. I want to be my best self. Her words ring in my ears when I am faced with challenges. She waits on me. She couldn’t possibly be this patient. She has class and style – always a professional. I want to have a love for my career the way she loves hers. She was born to do this.
