You Still Shine

Daily writing prompt
What personal belongings do you hold most dear?

Things have a way of being here today and gone tomorrow. Sometimes, however, there’s that one thing that grabs a hold of your heart for whatever reason. My dad gave me this necklace in 1990 – that’s 34 years ago! It’s the only thing that I possess at this moment that has my dad’s mark on it. Over the years everything else has disappeared. This necklace has stood the test of time and means much to me.

Today my dad hardly recognizes me and doesn’t speak much. Illness and time have worn away his memory and his zest for life. This gift reminds me of who he once was – his flair and sense of style. This cold piece of gold stands as a reminder of the brevity of life. How cold it can become when all that brings warmth to you disappears. No one hugs my dad anymore because he won’t allow it. No one sleeps in his bed anymore – they can’t. It has become cold. A sober reminder to give and take those hugs when you can.

  1. Praise God for the gift of joyful memories; they do offer comfort. I too find my mind returning to moments when my parents (and in-laws) were vibrant, serving God with passion and grace, sharing wisdom with us as we embarked upon our adult lives. Three of them grew very frail as they lived into their 90s. Time does take its toll. Now it’s our turn to minister to the next generation–and those coming up behind them. You are so right, RH–time races away from us. We must invest where we can, as long as we can.
