Funny How

“As if he belonged there”

My son literally did college with me. As a toddler, he hung out with just about any of my college friends who had some free time. On days when I had babysitting emergencies, they often rotated watching him, so I could get a class or two in. He roamed this campus – very energetic and friendly. I took this shot of him playing some sort of ball game with these students that neither I nor he knew. This huge lawn was a place we lazed around, played or studied.

Funny how, fifteen years later this would become his college too! Life has some interesting layers to it. We never know what tomorrow holds. Sometimes we are led to go ahead and pave the way for those coming behind. We do so without even knowing why. The first time I drove past this campus, I knew with was where I wanted to continue my college career. I can’t explain it – something just grabbed a hold of my heart. This was where I belong. This was where my son would eventually find a ‘home’.

When he graduated, we stood on the same steps he stood with me countless times as a toddler. It was almost surreal. Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, take some time to reflect on how things worked out for you and yours just the way they were intended to. Funny how little power we have at times to direct or control the outcomes we worry so much about. When my son applied to college – it was as if someone had gone ahead and opened every door for him. He got favor from every angle. This led him right back to his old stomping ground as a toddler.

Funny how we embrace stress as we develop a habitual romance with undue worry. Here are some words of wisdom that has worked well for me:

  • Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. [Matthew 6:34]
  • Don’t worry about anything but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. [Philippians 4:6]
  • Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? [Matthew 6:27]

Funny how in retrospect, we wished we had just slept instead worrying!
