Building Towers

This is the second week in January. Are we on task with our goals for this year or this month? Friday, January 10th was dubbed National Quitters Day. According to some research, that’s typically the day when most New Year’s resolutions come to an end. Were you named among the masses that quit? A friend of mine from Atlanta shared this picture of his driveway. For many of us from the Northeast that’s nothing to write home about. For the Southerners, it may be a bit too much. This can cause many to quit. Many of us quit for less than that. What’s the driving force behind your goals and plans? What keeps you committed?

Scripture tells us there was a time when the entire world spoke the same language [Genesis 11:1]. Then people decided to have a goal to build something that God didn’t approve of. So, He brought their dream to a halt – it ended in confusion and chaos. [ Genesis 11:9]. Man by nature, often seek to exalt themselves in their desire for greatness. It’s not uncommon to see us trying to be great without God. Even denying our need for God [consciously or subconsciously]. And yes, many have succeeded in accomplishing much without any acknowledgement of God. At the end of the journey , however, what they acquire is ‘temporal success and eternal failure’. They build their towers only to find in the end, no God dwells there. [ Stuart Briscoe].

As we plan this year, let’s give God latitude to invade ‘ our kingdom’. Maybe He wants to rearrange somethings. The end goal should be that He gets the credit – He gets the glory. You and I should know that even at our best, we are epic failures without His help, guidance, and favor. As we pursue the next big thing, let’s not be fooled into thinking that we ‘have it all together’. Very often, It only takes one shift in our circumstances to derail us and put us back at ground zero. Let’s do this with God! He is the best director simply because He knows what lies ahead and always has our best interest at heart. Wisdom teaches us to humbly use our gifts, talents, dreams and goals to make this world a better place where God gets the glory. Maybe if we seek to build His kingdom rather than our own, we wouldn’t quit so easily. Just a thought….

  1. I just wanted to say that all my writings here are written by Him. I pray before I write, so it’s all His idea, not mine. I’m just His instrument. Your writing resonates with me, Heart.

  2. I also appreciate Matthew 6:34 – each day has enough trouble. I try to plan ahead for the “big rocks” where I can, but find that just making it through each day is enough for me.
