Releasing Control

Daily writing prompt
What do you think gets better with age?

I wish aging was optional – don’t you? It’s not, but maturing certainly is a choice. With the years come some hard learned lessons. One that has been truly real for me is discerning between the things I can change and those I cannot. Then knowing what to do this new found reality. It seems to me that God has a way of teaching each of us about our limitations using a variety of tools. Your classroom of life probably looks nothing like mine. For some of us marriage brought the lessons or maybe health challenges. For me it was parenting.

It was in parenting that I discovered the best and worst about me. I found I had a need to control the outcomes of whatever task life threw at me. For a minute it seemed to work quite well in parenting until it didn’t. You can imagine my surprise when I saw this part of me at play. By the grace of God, I learned soon enough to release control of those things that were above my pay grade. The older I get the more I am at peace with my limitations. Letting go of that need to fix everything and everyone has become so much easier with age. With this comes a new kind of peace.

I discovered how to give my now adult children to God and go to sleep. And I do sleep well! This is a sweet spot and I’ll be forever grateful for the broken road that led me here.

‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.’
[Phil 4:6-7]
