Recently I have been trying to get an understanding of who my paternal grandfather was to our family. He died fairly young – my dad doesn’t even remember him. Still seeking, I am hoping one day I’ll get a picture of his life. He never lived long enough to see his children take their place in this world. As we celebrate Father’s Day, let’s reflect on those who never got to see the pieces come together. Often we say ‘gone too soon’.
I Wish You Could
I wish you could see me now
Walking in your footsteps
Dreaming big for you and me
Your words never fell on deaf ears
Though sometimes it appears that way
I heard you
They say I have your eyes
Your swag- your smile
You left your grit
Your fight- your courage behind
I picked them up
Carrying them like precious stones
Now and then I feel you
Then you slip away
Your footprints
Left marks on my heart and mind
By design
God gave me you
I wish you could see me now
We did it
Grace carried us
Your prayers were answered
Your seed took their seat at the table
Not just for us – for you too
“He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.” [Malachi 4:6]
