The Love That Won’t let Go

Love is one of those mysteries of life. It drives us to do things that boggles the mind some times. It causes mothers to become ferocious warriors, fathers to rise up like giants, men to climb mountains and women to swim rivers. We often act seemingly foolish and do the impossible because of love. With all this, our love many times have limits. The evidence is seen in divorce courts, family courts, prison cells, orphanages, bars and night clubs. We see it in the eyes of our children who grace the classrooms or the boys and girls roaming the streets of our city. We see it in the malice and toxicity at family gatherings [or lack thereof]. We see it in wars and greed. In the battered bodies of women, girls, boys and even men who show up at hospitals.

Then there is that love – the one that knows no limit and has no boundaries. That love that pursues us, waits on us, climbs in the pit and rescues us. We call it unconditional love – that love we are given, not ‘ because of ‘ but ‘in spite of’. I have been learning how to love like this. My love has not been perfected yet and I guess yours hasn’t too. God in His wisdom has allowed people in our lives to teach us His way of loving.

That sibling that brings out the worst in you. The coworker or boss that causes you to breathe deep. That husband or wife that keeps you in the ‘war room’. Those in-laws [or outlaws] that you do everything to avoid. That child [or children] whose existence has taught you the art of war and kept you on bended knees. All purpose by design to teach us to love the divine way. Is this your current situation?

Have you wondered if you can forgive one more time? Questioning why you continue to extend grace? Does your heart ache after being disappointed – again? Have you made up your mind to walk away – give up on him, her or them? Is your heart closed up, hardened with no more space for compassion? Do you lack the strength to do this one more time?

Over the years, I have seen God hold me when I couldn’t hold on to Him. I’ve had Him offer mercy not anger. He opened doors and favored me in times I was not worthy. When I broke promises to Him and myself – asked for forgiveness the millionth time, He forgave. His was way more than the seventy times seven. Never once has He held my transgressions against me nor reminded me of my past sins. Do you think He may be able to help me – help you to love like this?

For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the LORD, who has mercy on you. [Isaiah 54:10]

He loved me with a love that won’t let go:
