Last Words

As we come to the end of this month, we see many reminders that the festive season is upon us. Conversations about the holidays, food, and plans to visit here and there begin to take shape in our hearts and minds. This is also a time when memories of those we have lost begin to swirl around our minds. The empty seat at the table, the infectious laughter, the kind eyes or the warm hugs bring a smile or even a tear to the eye. The smells and sounds of yesteryear often brings a longing for what was. Loss is never easy.

Our friend, sister, classmate and confidante left us a few weeks ago. Here comes November and she won’t be here. Truthfully, I don’t remember much of our interaction as high students. However, I vividly remember the last words she shared with me a few weeks ago. In her pain, she resolved, ” I only want to make sure I’ve completed the work God has for me to do. I don’t want to leave anything unfinished.” Those words spoke of her perspective of life and what truly mattered. As I agreed with her – that was my prayer. From her mouth to God’s ear. Our Father searches the deep inner intents of our hearts. He grants us desires that align with His will and purpose. I can only imagine that God saw her heart and met her right where she was.

I am glad that our conversation gave me a glimpse into her heart. This is how I’ll remember her. A beautiful soul that wanted to fulfill her purpose here on earth – nothing less. I pray the seeds she planted will continue to flourish and bring forth abundant blessings. That her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and impacted. I remember the last time we hugged. It is fitting that it was at the school on the hill where we met 46 years ago. Her smile will forever be imprinted in our hearts. The quiet calm spirit that she embodied reflected her inner peace. Many others have their own memory of our ‘sister-friend’. For me, it will always be ‘her last words’. May this lead us to contemplate how we’d like to be remembered. When we dance our last dance, what story will it tell of us?
