Hello December

Welcome my dear friend! You are one of my favorite months. Over five decades ago a very pregnant young lady walked around waiting to embrace me for the first time. A few days later, there I was taking my very first breath. You were the first month I met. Every year since then you’ve brought me much joy. I celebrate my introduction to earth with you. So hello again!

Over the years it seems the noise around you has gotten increasingly louder. It seems with your coming everyone gets busier, some are overwhelmed and even stressed. For many depression and a sense of loneliness pervades their being and their space. Because of this many dread your coming; they shrink into oblivion or they fake it through their pain. For whatever reason many overextend themselves and end up in deep debt, financial and otherwise. Some resent the unfair and burdensome expectations placed on them when you show up. Many greet you with divided emotions. You signify the end of a ‘season’ – another year. Maybe one that left many unfulfilled desires; tasks not yet done. Feelings of failure or discouragement. Others often want to see you but still dread your coming. I can’t help it – I do love seeing you, every year.

Hello again my old friend
So great to see you again
You mark my birth
My introduction to this life
In your presence
God kissed me with the breath of life

You’ve always been good to me
Your coming reminds me
My days are numbered
I have but this amount of time
To find and embrace my purpose
So- I choose wisely
I choose to forgive- to love
To maximize the moments
To show up – be present
I choose life

  1. My birth month is also December, close to Christmas, which I was not happy about as a child. Too much else going on to really enjoy my birthday. Years later I met a young boy at church whose birthday was ON Christmas. I asked him if that bothered him. “Oh no!” he quickly replied. “I get to share my birthday with Jesus!” He helped change my attitude. It’s a special privilege to share the same birth month with the King of kings and Lord of lords!!

    1. I hear you. Thankfully, mine is early- even then it competes with all the pre-Christmas activities. I celebrate all month doing different things with different people at different times.☺

  2. December 8 or December 15?

This year has been very humbling for me. I was able to get assistance so the kids have some gifts under the tree. I know that isn’t the reason. It would be strange for them to go from gifts to nothing, I think. I have always told family members that I don’t want an inundation of gifts to begin with. It is a family tradition. You raise a great point about going into debt for the holidays though. It is very counterintuitive. Jesus came to free us, not for us to be idolaters.

    1. December 8th is my special day. I know it’s tough not to put a smile on their faces. I really don’t need gifts at this stage in life…it’s more about the opportunity to be with those I love. But yes there’s January- we trust God with our finances (or lack there of☺)
